Rev. Fr. Michael Manos, Associate Priest of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Troy, offered the following invocation:

“Lord our God, if nothing else is true it’s true that people die for what they love, and that there is beauty in this sacrifice. Whether over a lifetime or in a moment, we each give our lives to what we believe in, and we spend ourselves where we see worth.

The people in this room have seen worth in their fellow human-beings, and have given themselves to serve them. To keep those many citizens and communities which they represent happy and safe, and to answer their needs. Each person in this room has gifts to use for this noble task, and we ask that You help them to use these gifts in earnest.

Stand by their side. Grant them wisdom as a guide, courage as a partner, and set love as their purpose. Help them not only here but in every corner of their lives; as wives and husbands, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends, colleagues, neighbors, employees and employers.

Answer, Lord, the prayer that is in each of their hearts. Do not allow hope to go unheard, but turn toward everyone who calls on You and give them what they need. Care for us as a parent cares for a child; teaching, encouraging, forgiving, leading, and loving.

Guide this work today and reward honest effort with healthy harvest.

May You be known to everything that we know, Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions

Reps. Kesto, Lilly, Iden, Chang, Crawford, Ellison, Greig, Greimel, Leutheuser and Wittenberg offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 172.

A resolution to congratulate the government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on the celebration of their 106th National Day and declare October 10, 2017, as Taiwan Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Relations between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the United States are marked by strong bilateral trade, education, and cultural exchanges. The United States is Taiwan’s third largest trading partner and Taiwan is the tenth largest trading partner of the United States. In 2016, the United States exported $26 billion in goods and $11.9 billion in services to Taiwan; and

Whereas, Taiwan and the state of Michigan have long benefited from this relationship. In 2016, Michigan’s exports to Taiwan reached $298.13 million, making Taiwan Michigan’s 6th largest export market in Asia and one of the largest export markets in the world. Vibrant Michigan-Taiwan relations hold great promise for both our companies and workers; and

Whereas, Taiwan, located in the busiest section of airspace in East Asia, is an important part of the global air transport. Taiwan’s participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will contribute meaningfully to the ICAO’s goal of a safe, efficient, secure, economically sustainable, and environmentally responsible civil aviation sector; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body congratulate the government and people of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on the celebration of their 106th National Day and declare October 10, 2017, as Taiwan Day in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That we reaffirm the continuing support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO); and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the U.S. Secretary of State, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Chicago, Illinois, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
