Rev. Jessica Shults, Lead Pastor of Standale Reformed Church in Walker, offered the following invocation:

“Dear God we come together today still mindful of the gratitude we have experienced in our hearts during this past week of Thanksgiving. We have been reminded in Your word: to be joyful always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances…for this is Your will for us.

So we rejoice and celebrate the gifts of family, friends, shelter, nourishment, transportation, meaningful work…and so much more.

And we pray continually for those who live very different lives than ourselves. Those who struggle to experience basic human dignity in their lives. May we remember Your directive for our lives that we are blessed to be a blessing to others. For we know that each of us have an abundance of talents, enjoy places of power and influence…and so urge us through the work of Your Holy Spirit to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned, and invite the stranger in…so that in doing so whatever we do for one of the least of these, we have done for our Lord himself.

And now as we enter this Advent season, in anticipation of celebrating the arrival of Your son, protect us from being caught up in the greed, abundant busyness and distractions flooding our lives which keep us from focusing on the good gifts You bring. Instead may we lean into Your message of peace:

We pray for Your peace in this world when You will settle things fairly between nations, and make things right between peoples.

We pray for Your peace when all will turn their weapons into something useful but not for war.

We pray for You to show us how to simply be advocates for Your peace and hope. Help us to know that what we do makes a difference.

We pray for the peace You bring within families. Especially those with empty chairs at their holiday tables.

We pray for the peace You bring within ourselves.

We pray for Your peace to come for those who are ill, those who are grieving, those who are struggling, those who are suffering, those who are lonely, and those who have been devastated by disaster.

Surprise us with the possibilities of how Your vision of peace and hope might take root, and how we might live into this vision of justice and love for all of creation.

Even so Lord Jesus Come. Amen.”
