Reps. Camilleri, Cherry, Garza, Hertel, Hood, Tyrone Carter, Haadsma, Tate, Cavanagh, Bezotte, Glanville, Rogers, Sabo, Sneller, Sowerby and Thanedar offered the following resolution:

A resolution to declare May 21-27, 2022, as Boating Safety Week in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, There has been a long and important presence of responsible boating safety in our Great Lakes State; and

Whereas, The week of May 21 to May 27 represents the global awareness effort that encourages citizens to make the most of their boating experience by being responsible and reminding all boaters to brush up on the essential boating safety skills necessary to prepare for the boating season; and

Whereas, National Boating Safety Week was originally observed by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1952 and was expanded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower and enacted into law on June 4, 1958, as Public Law 85-445; and

Whereas, This state is fortunate to celebrate our Great Lakes and the fantastic diversity of water-based recreation we enjoy annually; and

Whereas, During the week from May 21 to May 27, this state's boating community celebrates Boating Safety Week through a campaign that aims to increase awareness of boating safety practices by collaborating with partners to share local community events, through social media, workshops, and more; and

Whereas, Boating Safety Week is the period of time in North America when people recognize the vital importance of highlighting safe boating practices; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare May 21-May 27, 2022, as Boating Safety Week in the state of Michigan. We recognize and celebrate the importance of teaching safe boating.
