From: Bryan Lindfors Sent: Monday, April 14, 2025 1:36 PM To: Joint Committee on Administrative Rules Subject: Adopt 2024 - Michigan Residential Code (not MRC-21) Dear JCAR, Please adopt the 2024 version of the MRC, and not the 2021 version. That way we will be using the most current version of the code. Michigan has done far more than most states in the past 5-years to address its housing affordability crisis. With “build baby build” as a mantra, our Governor and Director of the State Housing Development Authority have arguably done more to advance pro-housing efforts than any administration ever. Much of this positive momentum will be lost if the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affair’s (LARA) doesn’t alter its current plan to impose new code requirements that will add $15,000 or more in costs for the typical home being built in our state. There is a better and more flexible alternative. Unfortunately, administration officials now argue that they are required, supposedly by statute, to adopt an outdated and inflexible 2021 “model” code prior to jumping to a newly published 2024 version of the Michigan Residential Code that builders and even the administration says it supports. The Legislature’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules (JCAR), which has the authority to do so, should ask LARA to change these 2021 rules so Michigan has the best, up-to-date and most cost-effective code possible.
