House Bill 5431 (as reported with amendment) Sponsor: Representative William Byl

House Committee: Transportation

Senate Committee: Transportation and Tourism

CONTENT

The bill would amend the Pupil Transportation Act to revise the date from October 1, 1997, to October 1, 2002, when vehicles, other than school buses, that are used to transport passengers to or from school and school-related events must comply with the passenger protection Federal motor vehicle safety standards applicable to the construction and sale of these vehicles.

FISCAL IMPACT

The bill would have no State fiscal impact. Public and private schools could experience cost reductions from being allowed to continue using existing vehicles for pupil transportation. Any savings could be offset, however, due to the potential liability from using vehicles that do not meet Federal standards.
