A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5897 AS INTRODUCED 5-28-98

House Bill 5897 would amend the Michigan Transportation Fund act (Public Act 51 of 1951) to require the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute to conduct a comprehensive study of the current and future transportation needs of the state. The bill would require the institute to examine all aspects of road construction and deterioration (including construction materials, traffic flow, truck weights, and road usage), and to make recommendations for the Department of Transportation in the form of a 20-year implementation plan. The bill would require the study to be completed by October 1, 1999, and that copies be made available to the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees on transportation, the fiscal agencies, and the transportation standing committees.
