A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6032 AS INTRODUCED 9-15-98

House Bill 6032 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require that the safety chains on agricultural implements with a gross weight of 10,000 pounds or less conform to federal motor carrier safety regulations. Under current law, a vehicle or trailer must be connected to a towing vehicle by suitable safety chains or devices, one on each side of the coupling and at the extreme outer edge of the vehicle or trailer, so that the towed or drawn vehicle or trailer does not deviate more than three inches to either side of the path of the towing vehicle. Further, each of the connecting chains or devices must be of sufficient strength to haul the vehicle or trailer when loaded.
