A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 6243 AS INTRODUCED 11-5-98

House Bill 6243 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to require the secretary of state to provide a display module at each branch office to enable a person to view the information contained on a digitized license.

Under current law, a digitized license may contain an identifier for voter registration purposes. The digitized license also may contain information appearing in electronic or machine readable codes needed to conduct a transaction with the secretary of state. The law requires that the information be limited to a person's driver license number, birth date, license expiration date, and other information necessary for use with electronic devices, machine readers, or automatic teller machines. The information cannot contain a person's name, address, driving record, or other personal identifier, and the license must identify the encoded information.
