        A bill to amend 1961 PA 236, entitled

   "Revised judicature act of 1961,"

   by amending section 8401 (MCL 600.8401), as amended by 1991 PA

   192.

               THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 1         Sec. 8401.  A small claims division is created in each dis-

 2    trict as a division of the district court.  A judge of the dis-

 3    trict court shall sit as judge of the small claims division.  The

 4    jurisdiction of the small claims division  shall be  IS confined

 5    to cases for the recovery of money only when the amount claimed

 6    does not exceed  $1,750.00  $2,000.00.

 7         Enacting section 1.  This amendatory act takes effect

 8    January 1, 1998.
