A bill to authorize institutions of higher education to create and require students to sign certain education contracts; and to prescribe penalties for violation of the terms of the contract. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1. As used in this act: 2 (a) "Institution of higher education" means a college, uni- 3 versity, community college, or junior college described in sec- 4 tion 4, 5, or 6 of article VIII of the state constitution of 1963 5 or established under section 7 of article VIII of the state con- 6 stitution of 1963. 7 (b) "Student" means a person who is enrolled or accepted for 8 enrollment at an institution of higher education. 06519'98 LTB 2 1 Sec. 2. (1) An institution of higher education may develop 2 a student responsibility contract that includes, but is not 3 limited to, any of the following: 4 (a) The standard of conduct expected of the student while he 5 or she is enrolled in that institution. 6 (b) The institution's code of ethics. 7 (c) The disciplinary action that may be taken if the student 8 fails to comply with the standards set out in the contract. 9 (2) An institution of higher education may require a student 10 to sign a student responsibility contract described in subsection 11 (1) as a condition of enrollment in that institution. 12 Sec. 3. If a student signs a student responsibility con- 13 tract and fails to comply with the terms of the contract, an 14 institution of higher education may initiate disciplinary action 15 against the student as described in the contract. 06519'98 Final page.
