SENATE BILL NO. 1117 May 6, 1998, Introduced by Senator SHUGARS and referred to the Committee on Government Operations. A bill to require institutions of higher education to report on free or reduced tuition for certain students. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT: 1 Sec. 1. As used in this act: 2 (a) "Institution of higher education" means a college, uni- 3 versity, community college, or junior college described in sec- 4 tion 4, 5, or 6 of article VIII of the state constitution of 1963 5 or established under section 7 of article VIII of the state con- 6 stitution of 1963. 7 (b) "Parent" means a biological or adoptive parent or legal 8 guardian. 9 (c) "Student" means a person enrolled or accepted for 10 enrollment at an institution of higher education. 11 Sec. 2. The governing board of each institution of higher 12 education shall submit a report to the senate and house 06246'98 LTB 2 1 appropriations committees, the senate and house higher education 2 appropriations subcommittees, and the senate and house fiscal 3 agencies by August 1 of each year that includes the following 4 information regarding the previous academic year: 5 (a) The number of students who received a tuition waiver or 6 a reduction in tuition rate solely because 1 of the student's 7 parents is an administrator, tenured faculty member, or tenure 8 track faculty member at the institution where the student is 9 enrolled. 10 (b) The total of the amount of tuition waived or reduced 11 solely because 1 of the student's parents is an administrator, 12 tenured faculty member, or tenure track faculty member at the 13 institution where the student is enrolled. 06246'98 Final page.
