A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4206 AS INTRODUCED 2-9-99

House Bill 4206 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow township officials to jointly determine road speeds, working together with county officials and the state police. Currently the task of setting speed limits on county roads is a shared responsibility requiring the cooperation only of state and county officials.

Specifically, House Bill 4206 would specify that if after conducting an engineering and traffic investigation, the county road commission, the township board, and the director of the Department of State Police jointly determine that vehicle speed on a county highway (including an intersection) is unreasonable or unsafe, then the officials acting jointly could establish a reasonable and safe maximum or minimum speed limit. That speed limit would be in effect when signs giving notice of the speed limit were put in place.
