A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4754 AS INTRODUCED 6-3-99

House Bill 4754 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the penalties for drivers of heavy trucks when their violation of the speed laws is excessive. Currently, the driver of a truck whose gross weight is 10,000 pounds or more, a truck-tractor with a trailer, or a combination of these vehicles, cannot exceed a speed of 55 miles per hour on highways, streets, or freeways, or a speed of 35 miles per hour during the period when reduced loadings are being enforced. Truckers who violate these speeds are responsible for civil infractions. House Bill 4754 provides that a driver who violated these speed laws by operating a truck with a gross weight of 54,000 pounds or more, at 75 miles per hour or more, would be guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000.
