REVISE DEFINITION OF

OPTOMETRIST

House Bill 4772

Sponsor: Rep. Gerald Law

Committee: Health Policy

Complete to 8-16-99

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4772 AS INTRODUCED 6-10-99

The bill would revise the definition of the practice of optometry and the definition of pharmaceutical agent. Under the bill, the "practice of optometry" would be expanded to include the use of orthoptic and binocular vision therapy and the use of low vision techniques, low vision therapy counseling, and low vision rehabilitation therapy to correct or alleviate a condition or defect (or the effects of a condition or defect) of the eye.

The bill would also delete the current definition of "diagnostic pharmaceutical agent" and redefine the term as a topically administered prescription drug or other topically administered drug used for the purpose of diagnosing the presence or absence of defects or abnormal conditions (or their effects) of the human eye.
