INCREASE FINES FOR CRIMES

AGAINST SENIOR CITIZENS

House Bill 4880

Sponsor: Rep. Jennifer Faunce

Committee: Criminal Law and Corrections

Complete to 10-15-99

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4880 AS INTRODUCED 9-28-99

The bill would amend the Penal Code to allow a court to order double the normal fine where the victim of a crime was 65 years of age or older. An individual who was convicted of committing a crime where the victim was 65 years old or older could be made to pay a fine of no more than twice the authorized fine for such a crime. If the crime was punishable by a minimum and maximum fine, the court would be required to order the criminal to pay at least twice the minimum fine and could order him or her to pay as much as twice the maximum fine.

The bill's provisions would apply only to those crimes committed on or after the bill took effect.
