A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5918 AS INTRODUCED 6-21-00

Currently, under Public Act 372 of 1927, which regulates certain firearms, members of certain occupations, such as peace officers and constables, who might not otherwise qualify for a firearms license, are allowed to carry concealed weapons. Included among these are Department of Corrections' (DOC) employees who have been authorized by the director of the department to carry concealed weapons while performing their duties, or while traveling to or from those duties. House Bill 5918 would amend the act to include parole officers among those DOC employees who may carry a concealed weapon. The bill would specify that the provision applied to a parole officer who was employed by the DOC.
