Lord, as this day begins, it truly is a day of new beginnings, full of hope and promise for today and the new year. But we know that throughout this year and even throughout the day we will be challenged, and our feelings of hope and promise will be challenged. We ask You for strength and perseverance as we struggle to maintain to the sense of optimism. We also ask for a blessing of Your wisdom as we go about our business today. We've been uniquely blessed with the opportunity to serve our citizens, but it also comes as a enormous responsibility, and we ask You to help us exercise that responsibility to the best of our abilities.

Finally, Lord, we ask for an extra measure of Your presence for our members and their families who struggle with health concerns. You know who they are, and You're well aware of their circumstances and their special needs.

This and more we ask in Your name. Amen.

Mr. President and colleagues on the floor, if I could have your attention, I'd like to announce that Michigan has a new citizen, and I'm a new grandfather for the first time. Joshua Dean Koch was born on January 17 in the early hours of the morning; he weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces and is 20 inches long. The proud parents are Amy and Eric Koch from Charlevoix, Michigan, and I'm the proud grandpa.

Mr. President, as soon as we get his social security number, we'll be taking you up on your college education promotion.
