A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4422 AS INTRODUCED 3-6-01
Currently, the Michigan Penal Code prohibits the carrying of concealed weapons except under certain circumstances listed in the code. Among other exemptions, the code allows a person to carry an unloaded pistol in a "wrapper" or container in the trunk of his or her vehicle (a) from the place of purchase to his or her home or place of business; (b) to a place of repair or back to his or her home or place of business; or (c) in moving goods from one "place of abode or business to another place of abode or business." The bill would add a fourth exemption to carrying unloaded pistols in a wrapper or container in the trunk of a vehicle: to or from the person's home ("place of abode), place of purchase, or place of business to (and from) a law enforcement agency to present the pistol for safety inspection as prescribed by the pistol licensing act, Public Act 372 of 1937.
