House Bill 4988

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4988 AS INTRODUCED 6-26-01

House Bill 4988 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to revise the permissible decibel level for a motorcycle at sale. Specifically, the bill would prohibit a dealer from selling or offering for sale new motorcycles or mopeds whose drivers intended to operate them on streets or highways in Michigan, if the vehicles produced a maximum noise exceeding 80 DBA. Currently the law prohibits such sales if a motorcycle or moped produces a maximum noise of 83 DBA. [Under the code, "DBA" or "decibels on the a-weighted network" means decibels measured on the a-weighted network of a sound level meter, as specified in American National Standards Institute standard S 1.4-1971.]
