A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5042 AS INTRODUCED 7-12-01

The bill would amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to require the Department of Natural Resources to provide a reward to persons who turn in game animals that are infected with tuberculosis. Under the bill, if a person presented a lawfully taken deer, bear, or elk at a DNR field office, department staff would be required to determine whether the animal was infected with tuberculosis, and, if it were, the person would be entitled to receive a free license to take another animal, and a $50 reward. Funds for rewards paid under the bill would be appropriated from the Game and Fish Protection Fund.
