A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5862 AS INTRODUCED 4-9-02

House Bill 5862 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the damage amount requirement for filing a police report from $400 to $2,000.

Currently the driver of a motor vehicle involved in an accident that injures or kills a person, or that damages property to an apparent extent totaling $400 or more, must immediately report the accident at the nearest or most convenient police station, or to the nearest or most convenient police officer. The officer receiving the report forwards it to the Department of State Police, and there the information is used to compile reports for public use (however, copies of the report are retained for at least three years at the local police department, sheriff's department, or local state police post making the report). Under the bill, these provisions would be retained, however the minimum damage amount would increase to $2,000.
