CELL PHONE SERVICES: REQUIRE NUMBER PORTABILITY

House Bill 5886

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5886 AS INTRODUCED 4-11-02

House Bill 5886 would amend the Michigan Telecommunications Act to require a cellular phone service provider to provide "number portability" to its customers. ("Number portability" is the capability for a customer to change service providers without having to change the customer's phone number, while preserving the full range of functionality that the customer could obtain by changing numbers.) The bill would also specify that a provider of cellular service would have to make available to other providers direct inward dialing and remote call forwarding until number portability was available. Currently the act requires basic local exchange service providers to offer number portability but does not require cellular service providers to do so.
