Sponsor: Representative Joseph Rivet
CONTENT
The bill would amend Section 622 of the Michigan Vehicle Code to increase the amount of damage that triggers a traffic accident reporting requirement. Under Section 622, a driver who is involved in a motor vehicle accident must report the accident to the police if it injures or kills a person or damages property to an apparent extent of $400 or more. Under the bill, the damage threshold would be $1,000. The bill would take effect on January 1, 2004.
(Section 622 is independent of Vehicle Code requirements in Sections 617, 617a, and 618 that a driver stop and remain at the scene of an accident if it results in injury or death to a person or damage to property, until the driver has fulfilled the requirements of Section 619 (given his or her name and address and the vehicle’s registration number, and shown his or her driver license, to a police officer, the person struck, or the driver or occupants of a vehicle that was hit, and assisted an injured person in securing medical aid or transportation); requirements in Section 620 that a driver, who collides with another vehicle, remain at the scene until he or she has notified the owner or operator of the other vehicle; and requirements in Section 621 that a driver notify the property owner or report to the police, if an accident results in damage to fixtures only. The bill would not amend those sections.)
