NONPARTISAN BALLOT PORTION H.B. 6002 (H-1): FLOOR ANALYSIS
House Bill 6002 (Substitute H-1 as reported without amendment)
Sponsor: Representative David Palsrok
House Committee: Local Government and Urban Policy
Senate Committee: Government Operations
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law to add district court judges, village officers, and school board members to the list of nonpartisan offices on a general November election ballot.
Presently, at the general November election, the names of the nonpartisan offices to be voted upon must be placed on a separate judicial ballot containing no party designation in the following order: justices of the Supreme Court, judges of the Court of Appeals, circuit court judges, probate court judges, and circuit court commissioners in the years in which they are elected. The bill would delete reference to circuit court commissioners, and add to the list:
-- District court judges.
-- The following village officers in substantially the following order in the year in which elections for the offices are held: president, clerk, treasurer, and trustees.
-- School board member, in a year in which an election for the office is held.
Also, the bill would require the names to be placed on a separate portion of the ballot, rather a separate judicial ballot.
