SUBSTITUTE FOR

SENATE BILL NO. 578

                                                                             A bill to establish American heroes week in the state of                          

Michigan.                                                                   

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

1       Sec. 1.  The legislature declares that the calendar week in                 

2   which September 11 falls each year is American heroes week in               

3   this state and encourages academic institutions to educate and              

4   inspire children about local heroes and role models.                        

5       Sec. 2.  (1) The legislature recognizes that on September                   

6   11, 2001 and the days that followed, many ordinary Americans                

7   showed true heroism by their acts of selflessness, compassion,              

8   dedication, courage, and integrity.                                         

9       (2) The legislature declares that American heroes week is a                 

10  fitting tribute to the many individuals who displayed                       

11  extraordinary altruism, compassion, courage, integrity,                     

12  dedication, and selflessness during and after the terrorist                 

1   attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11,            

2   2001.                                                                       

3       (3) The legislature declares that American heroes week is a                 

4   fitting tribute to the many individuals who display extraordinary           

5   altruism, compassion, courage, integrity, dedication, and                   

6   selflessness in their daily work, behavior, and accomplishments.
