House Resolution No. 291.
A resolution commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Republican Party in Jackson, Michigan.
Whereas, The Republican Party held its first meeting under the oaks near the intersection of West Franklin and Second streets in Jackson, Michigan, on July 6, 1854; and
Whereas, The marker at that historic site states, "Here, Under the Oaks July 6th, 1854, was born the Republican Party destined in the throes of civil strife to abolish slavery, vindicate democracy and perpetuate the union"; and
Whereas, The concerned people at the Jackson meeting officially adopted the name Republicans and drafted the first Republican Party platform; and
Whereas, The united voice of this Republican Party became the clarion call for all American citizens to oppose the forced servitude of their fellow man; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body commemorate the sesquicentennial celebration of the birth of the Republican Party and express appreciation for the Republican Party’s valuable contributions to our state and nation; and be it further
Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the city of Jackson, the Jackson County Republican Party, and the Michigan Republican Party.
