A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 4755 AS INTRODUCED 5-10-05

House Bill 4755 would amend the Michigan Election Law to require that school board and village elections be held in November.

More specifically, the bill requires that school board members be elected on one of the following dates (and requires the school board to adopt a resolution to comply with this requirement):

§                     the November regular election date in both even and odd years;

§                     the general November election date; or,

§                     the odd-year general November election date.

Further and under the bill, a village would be required to adopt a resolution indicating that it would hold its regular election on one of the same November dates.  The bill specifies the township clerk would conduct the village regular election.

Finally, the bill specifies that if a village's regular or special election were held in conjunction with another election conducted by a township, then the village would pay the township a proportionate share of the election expense.  If not, the village would pay the township 100 percent of the actual costs of conducting the regular or special election.

As introduced, the bill contains an effective date of January 1, 2006.
