House Bill 5643 with House committee amendment

Committee:  Judiciary

Complete to 3-1-06

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5643 AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE

The bill would amend the Prisoner Reimbursement to the County Act to give a county three years (rather than 12 months) to file a civil action seeking reimbursement for the expenses of confining a person to county jail.

A county currently must file a civil action seeking reimbursement within 12 months after the release from county jail of a sentenced prisoner or of a pretrial detainee who is later convicted of a felony.

MCL 801.87

FISCAL IMPACT:

The bill could increase revenues for counties, with the amount depending on the extent to which they were able to recover costs that otherwise would have been unrecoverable.
