A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5890 AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE
House Bill 5890 would amend Public Act 566 of 1978, which sets standards of duty for public officers and employees, to allow a school board member to volunteer services in the school district where he or she is serving, under certain circumstances.
Under the bill, a member of a school board could be appointed to, or serve as, a volunteer coach or supervisor of a student extracurricular activity, if both of the following conditions were met:
o The school board member received no compensation for service as a volunteer coach or supervisor.
o During the period he or she served, the school board member abstained from voting on issues before the school board concerning that program.
