HARVEST OF STATE FORESTLAND S.B. 918: COMMITTEE SUMMARY
Senate Bill 918 (as introduced 12-1-05)
Sponsor: Senator Ron Jelinek
Committee: Agriculture, Forestry and Tourism
Date Completed: 1-25-06
CONTENT
The bill would amend Part 525 (Disposal of Timber from State Lands) of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to require the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), by December 31, 2006, to review the factors used to determine what State forestland should be harvested, and modify those factors as appropriate, based on the review.
In conducting the review, the DNR would have to seek input from the forest products industry. Following completion of the review, the Department would have to prepare and submit to the Legislature a report describing the review and detailing any modifications to the treatment-limiting factors that the DNR planned to apply in determining what State forestlands should be harvested.

FISCAL IMPACT
The bill would cost the State a small amount for the resources, including staff and materials, used to review the treatment-limiting factors and to compile the report. This would be a one-time cost. Since funds are not provided to cover this expense, resources would be diverted from other activities.
