Rep. Brian Palmer, from the 36th District, offered the following invocation:
“Dear Heavenly Father,
Bless everyone in the chamber this day with the wisdom to carry out Your holy will. We ask for Your guidance in order that we may pursue just policies that will help to lift up all of Your children through their own efforts, as You are most generous in helping those who help themselves. Father, show us the way to settle matters of conscience as Your only Son, our Lord, did when he walked among us.
God in heaven, we ask that You bestow Your blessings upon all of the citizens in our great state as we weather a seemingly endless economic storm. Help us carry this burden, lift us up, and reveal Your presence to people across our state so that they may place their trust in You, to provide a light at the end of the darkness.
We ask that You help us all to work together to create the means for a better life for those of our citizens who may be challenged, and that when distressed, the Members of this Chamber and our fellow men and women throughout our state remember the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as we attempt to carry out our duty:
‘The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.’
Send us the Holy Spirit so that we may be strong, humble and wise, as we lead those who depend upon us into this new year.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. Amen.”
