A bill to amend 1972 PA 230, entitled
"Stille-DeRossett-Hale single state construction code act,"
(MCL 125.1501 to 125.1531) by adding section 4d.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 4d. (1) Beginning 1 year after the effective date of the
amendatory act that added this section and until rules promulgated
under subsection (2) become effective, the builder of a new
residential building or structure shall install at least 1 carbon
monoxide alarm in each new residential building or structure.
(2) The director shall promulgate rules that establish
standards and requirements for the installation of carbon monoxide
alarms in a new residential building or structure. The rules shall
provide that at least 1 carbon monoxide alarm be installed in each
dwelling unit of a single-family dwelling, 1- or 2-family detached
dwelling, or multiple-family dwelling.
(3) Beginning the code cycle after the effective date of the
rules promulgated under subsection (2), the director shall include
in the code provisions requiring the installation of carbon
monoxide alarms. Under such circumstances, the provisions in the
code shall supersede this section.
(4) This section shall be known and may be cited as "the
Overbeck law".
