A bill to amend 1953 PA 232, entitled
"Corrections code of 1953,"
(MCL 791.201 to 791.285) by adding section 68b.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 68b. (1) The department shall provide for college-level
classes to be offered to prisoners in all correctional facilities.
The courses shall be conducted by accredited colleges or
universities, and shall allow prisoners to accumulate credits
toward the completion of an undergraduate degree. Whenever
possible, the department shall arrange for the courses to be
offered at no expense to the prisoner or the department, but if
tuition or other related expenses are charged, the prisoner is
responsible for paying the tuition and expenses.
(2) The department shall allow prisoners to enroll in and
participate in high-school-level or college-level correspondence
courses at the prisoner's own expense.
