House Resolution No. 142.
A resolution to memorialize the United States Congress to investigate issues regarding the high price of gasoline nationally and in Michigan; to identify long-term solutions to sustain lower gasoline prices; and to encourage the development and use of ethanol and biodiesel fuels as well as other emerging alternative energy technologies to lower the market price of gasoline.
Whereas, For the past two years, major oil companies have been racking up record-breaking profits while this nation's motoring public have been paying painfully at the pump. The tremendous profits were widely expected by drivers who have seen the price of gasoline soar in recent months. If gasoline prices continue to rise, then the household budgets of Americans across the nation will be seriously impacted; and
Whereas, The ongoing reports of highly volatile gasoline prices make it difficult for Michigan families to live within a budget. This spring, Michigan had the dubious distinction of having the highest gasoline prices in the country. These gasoline prices make it even harder for Michigan's citizens, already hit by a deteriorating economy, to budget commutingexpenses for getting to work or school, or to plan a summer vacation or weekend trip. Tourism is an essential component to Michigan's economy and the price of gasoline directly affects our state's tourism industry. Identifying the reasons that gasoline prices rise so quickly and fall much more slowly is critical to assisting citizens in meeting their energy needs; and
Whereas, Oil industry experts point to a number of factors that cause gasoline prices to rise: increased global demand and lower supplies, refineries having to manufacture more bouquet fuels, and insufficient refinery capacity. Nonetheless, many citizens question the extent of the price increases and suggest the possibility that oil companies are engaging in price fixing or profiteering activities. Citizens are demanding an investigation of the reasons for these extreme prices while asserting that long-term solutions must be found to prevent future recurrences of these price spikes; and
Whereas, One approach to solving this country's energy problems is to invest in alternative forms of energy. Federal energy legislation was adopted in 2005 authorizing the investment of billions of dollars in the production and use of alternative fuels such as ethanol and biodiesel. By supporting the domestic production and use of these alternative fuels, and promoting investment in research for other emerging alternative energy technologies, we can make vehicle fuels more affordable and reduce our reliance on foreign oil supplies; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we memorialize the United States Congress to investigate issues regarding the high price of gasoline nationally and in Michigan; to identify long-term solutions to lower gasoline prices; and to encourage the development and use of ethanol and biodiesel fuels as well as other emerging alternative energy technologies to lower the market price of gasoline; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and the members of the Michigan Congressional delegation.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Agriculture.
Reps. Sheltrown, Stahl, Bieda, Accavitti, Ball, Booher, Brown, Byrnes, Clack, Constan, Cushingberry, Dean, Elsenheimer, Espinoza, Farrah, Garfield, Gillard, Gonzales, Green, Hammel, Hammon, Hansen, Horn, Rick Jones, RobertJones, Lahti, LeBlanc, Leland, Lemmons, Marleau, Mayes, McDowell, Melton, Nitz, Pearce, Polidori, Proos, Sak, Shaffer, Spade, Vagnozzi and Wojno offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 143.
A resolution recognizing July 1 - 7, 2007, as Dietary Manager's Association Week in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Certified Dietary Managers (CDMs) work in hundreds of healthcare facilities across the state and in thousands across the entire nation; and
Whereas, CDMs provide foodservice safety and sanitation protection for all types of facilities. They work in hospitals, Veterans Administration facilities, nursing homes, schools and other non-commercial foodservice settings; and
Whereas, CDMs are a diverse group of professionals. There are CDMs from around the globe and of all ethnic backgrounds. They are of all different ages, ranging from the young, students with proctors, to the elder baby boomers now beginning retirement; and
Whereas, CDMs are certified by, to name a few, the University of Florida in Gainesville, University of North Dakota, University of California and Lansing Community College; and
Whereas, CDMs attend seminars throughout the year to keep them updated with the latest foodservice industry changes. They receive an additional certification of "CFPP" (Certified Food Protection Professionals) which expands on the safety and sanitation aspects of the entire foodservice industry. CDMs are also certified in ServSafe, a program designed to provide additional safety and protection to the thousands of residents that they support in foodservice areas; and
Whereas, CDMs have continual online communication with the networks of the foodservice industry. This provides them with information regarding state regulations and any changes that need to be addressed; and
Whereas, CDMs have been a growing industry for decades and it is time that they are congratulated for all the dedication they have shown every day of the year in all of the facilities where they monitor the safety of foodservice; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize July 1 - 7, 2007, as Dietary Manager's Association Week in the state of Michigan.
Pending the reference of the resolution to a committee,
Rep. Angerer moved that Rule 71 be suspended and the resolution be considered at this time.
The motion prevailed, 3/5 of the members present voting therefor.
The question being on the adoption of the resolution,
