Rep. Fulton Sheen, from the 88th District, offered the following invocation:
“Lord after a long winter full of ice and snow, we are looking forward to the spring. We are looking forward to the warmth of the sun which will soon cause the trees to bud, the grass to green and the crops to produce a harvest.
in the same vein, the people and the families in our state have for many years experienced difficulty finding a job to provide for their loved ones. Our businesses and job providers have had trouble making ends meet, being competitive and simply staying in business.
We the elected Legislature and the citizens of Michigan, look to You, O Lord, for divine guidance and strategies on how to fix what is broken, repair our economy and make Michigan once again a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family.
Lord You know there are many agendas here in Lansing swirling and posturing for position and control. Some of these agendas are a sincere attempt to make things better, but too many others are self-serving or meaningless gestures and bills, which make it look like and sound like we are doing something, but in reality accomplish nothing.
Psalm 5:1-3
‘Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God for to You I pray. In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation.’
Lord i pray for mercy on our state and forgiveness for the poor choices we have made.
Lord raise up real leaders that have a heart for the people, not political figure heads who are only concerned about power and self promotion. Lord replace any prideful or foolish leadership, with wise and good leadership in our state.
finally, i pray that as You shake all that can be shaken, that the elected officials and the people will stop relying on upon themselves, the economy, their job, and the government, and put their trust, hope, and reliance upon You. Lord give our elected officials and the people of Michigan eyes that see, ears that hear and a mind that comprehends the things of the Spirit. Give them wisdom, insight and the courage to do what needs to be done according to Your will. in Jesus name i pray - aMeN.”

Motions and Resolutions

Dean, Rocca, Hammel, Bauer, Warren, Bennett, Wojno, Valentine, Brandenburg, Steil, Gaffney, Stahl, Byrnes, Green, Meekhof, Hammon, Johnson, Lemmons, Gillard, Nofs, Ebli, Huizenga, Schuitmaker, Accavitti, Agema, Brown, Byrum, Cheeks, Clack, Clemente, Condino, Constan, Gonzales, Hopgood, Robert Jones, Kathleen Law, Leland, McDowell, Meadows, Meisner, Pearce, Polidori, Proos, Sak, Sheltrown, Alma Smith, Spade, Tobocman and Vagnozzi offered the following resolution:
house Resolution No. 299.
A resolution to urge universities and K-12 schools to warn children and young adults about the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, to encourage physicians and pharmacists to alert parents to the inherent dangers of these drugs, and to encourage parents to keep these medications out of their children’s reach.
Whereas, Household medicine cabinets pose a danger to the health and safety of children and young adults. Medicine cabinets may contain pain relievers, anti-depressants, anti-hypertensives, and myriad other medications that can harm children. Medications prescribed for parents or others in a household may appear safe and benign to some young children. Children often mistakenly think that medicine cabinets contain only “safe” medications that “mom” gives them when they are sick; and
Whereas, Recently, a teenage boy, Spencer Berndt of Rockford, Michigan, died from an allergic reaction after he took some of his mother’s pain medications to ease the pain of an injury. Tragically, Spencer was unaware that prescription medications are only safe for the person they are prescribed for and their improper use by others can have serious consequences; and
Whereas, Some teens may experiment with prescription drugs. It is becoming increasingly common for teenagers to abuse pain medications, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and other drugs found in a parent’s medicine cabinet. According to the University of Michigan Monitoring the Future Survey, 3 percent of 8th-graders, 7 percent of 10th-graders, and about 10 percent of 12th-graders abused prescription drugs in 2006. There have been reports of teen deaths and overdoses from prescription medications; and
Whereas, Abuse of drugs can have a very damaging effect on the still developing brains of children and young adults. Prescription and OTC medications that are abused or used for nonmedical reasons can alter brain activity and lead to dependence; and
Whereas, We need to get the word out to children and teens that prescription medications, OTC medications, and other common items in household medicine cabinets are potentially dangerous and should not be used improperly or without their parents supervision; and
Whereas, Parents need to be informed of the potential danger to their children of the common medications lurking inside their medicine cabinets and to check their medicine cabinets and discard any prescription drugs that are no longer required to treat a medical condition so that these medications are not available to be misused or accidentally ingested; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge universities and K-12 schools to warn children and young adults about the dangers of prescription drugs, we encourage physicians and pharmacists to alert parents to the inherent dangers of these drugs, and we encourage parents to keep these medications out of their children’s reach; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be made available to all K-12 schools, colleges, universities, educational institutions, physicians offices, and healthcare facilities in the state of Michigan.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Education.
Reps. Schuitmaker, Agema, Angerer, Booher, Brown, Dean, Elsenheimer, Garfield, Green, Hansen, Horn, Huizenga, Rick Jones, Knollenberg, LaJoy, Lemmons, Meadows, Meekhof, Meltzer, Miller, Nitz, Opsommer, Palmer, Pastor, Pearce, Proos, Robertson, Sak, Shaffer, Simpson, Alma Smith and Stahl offered the following resolution:
house Resolution No. 300.
A resolution to oppose the expenditure of public funds to repeat any element of the 2008 Michigan presidential primary.
Whereas, Due to a variety of circumstances involving national Democratic Party rules, there have been public discussions of a possible need to repeat the statewide presidential primary or hold party caucuses in order for Michigan votes to be counted in the national primary process and at that party’s nominating convention; and
Whereas, There are a host of problems with the viability of somehow repeating the primary process. A range of suggestions has been proposed, including repeating the primary, holding local caucuses, or developing a mail-in voting procedure. None of these should be paid for with public money. The January primary cost Michigan taxpayers about $10 million. It has been estimated that a repeat of the Democratic presidential primary could cost as much as $12 million; and
Whereas, In a cash-strapped state whose citizens are suffering from harsh economic times, to direct more public funds to another primary or any other activity related to this problem would be an affront to the people of this state, regardless of political persuasion. Michigan citizens clearly do not wish to see any further redirection of limited state funds from other pressing state needs; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we oppose the expenditure of public funds to repeat the 2008 Michigan presidential primary; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Governor of Michigan.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Ethics and Elections.
