A resolution recognizing June 2008 as Professional Pest Management Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Effective pest management in homes, businesses, and public places throughout our state is an important factor in maintaining the health and well-being of all Michiganders; and

Whereas, Pest management professionals help protect Michigan’s food supply, homes, and the environment from disease and pest-related illnesses by practicing environmentally-friendly pest-control methods; and

Whereas, The Michigan Pest Control Association provides networking and leadership opportunities for Michigan’s pest management professionals and is recognized for its efforts to protect our environment, as well as to ensure the safe and effective use of pest management materials; and

Whereas, The National Pest Management Association is committed to educating the public about the dangers posed by pests and the damage they can cause through its website, www.pestworld.org; and

Whereas, Pest Management Month offers all Michiganders an opportunity to understand and appreciate the important role that pest management providers play in ensuring the health and well-being of Michiganders; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize June 2008 as Professional Pest Management Month in the state of Michigan, and call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.

House Resolution No. 337.

A resolution declaring the week of April 27, 2008, as White Cane Week throughout the state of Michigan.

Whereas, The Lions of Michigan is an organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for all people, especially Michigan residents who are visually impaired; and

Whereas, Each year, the Lions of Michigan promote a ten-day period in late April and Early May known as “White Cane Week,” in which they collect funds to assist the needy in obtaining eye examinations, eyeglasses and white canes. It also supports many sight conservation projects such as Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, the Michigan Eye Bank and Transplantation Center in Ann Arbor, and the Welcome Home for the Blind, a home for the elderly blind in Grand Rapids; and

Whereas, White Cane Week serves to raise awareness among motorists about Michigan’s White Cane Law, which provides blind pedestrians using white canes, walkers, or guide dogs with additional protection when using crosswalks and other pedestrian crossings; and

Whereas, Begun by the East Side Detroit Lions, White Cane Week has been recognized by the Lions of Michigan since 1932 and has been recognized in Michigan in the form of the White Cane Law since 1936; and

Whereas, The white cane has become an international symbol which identifies a sightless person in the community and reminds those who can see of the many obstacles the blind experience on a daily basis; and

Whereas, The white cane, by allowing all blind people to move freely and safely from place to place, makes it possible for them to fully participate in and contribute to our society; and

Whereas, Extending accessibility is essential to enabling those who lack sight, but not vision, achieve a reasonable quality of life; and

Whereas, White Cane Week aims to create among Michiganians a greater respect for the white cane as a symbol of independence, not dependence; and

Whereas, The white cane, which all blind citizens of our state has the right to carry, demonstrates and symbolizes their ability to achieve a full and independent life, and their capacity to work productively in competitive employment; and

Whereas, During the last three decades, White Cane Week has alerted a multitude of community members to the needs of the blind and has helped many blind people live happy and fruitful lives as citizens of the Great Lakes State; and

Whereas, This organization of devoted volunteers is committed to helping the visually impaired lead normal lives in today’s society, which depends so greatly on the ability to see for routine daily activities; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Resolutions, That the members of this legislative body declare the week of April 27, 2008, as White Cane Week throughout the state of Michigan.

A resolution recognizing the 10th annual Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing: Partners Building Communities.

Whereas, Since 1998, the Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing has become the largest conference of its kind, attracting service providers, nonprofit and for-profit developers, government officials, and other leaders in the community development industry; and

Whereas, The conference offers an unmatched variety of programming aimed at educating participants and promoting the need for affordable housing including: asset building for families and individuals; community and economic development; creating and preserving multifamily housing; ending homelessness; homeownership; and organizational development; and

Whereas, The conference has supported efforts by the more than 5,000 members of the Living in Michigan Coalition to advocate for full funding for Michigan’s Housing & Community Development Fund and, as a result, the fund received its first appropriation of over $2 million; and

Whereas, The community and economic development industry strives to provide quality housing for all; create innovative strategies to develop vibrant and healthy communities; support and build main streets and commercial corridors to promote economic opportunity for distressed communities; advocate for programs and activities that improve neighborhoods and improve the quality of life; and help people create positive change in their lives; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize the 10th annual Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing: Partners Building Communities. We recognize and applaud the efforts of the conference and its participants to enhance the quality of life in Michigan by working to provide quality affordable housing and vibrant stable communities for all its residents.
