We thank Him for so many wonderful things He has done for us, especially during this, our Thanksgiving holiday time, when we recall and call to mind all the wonderful things our God does for us. And we thank Him for placing us here in our beautiful state of Michigan where His creation, the talents of His creation just burst into beauty from the one part of the state to the very other—from the east to the west and from the north to the south—and we thank Him for all the wonderful things.
But, Lord, we do ask You also to be aware in this time of our life on this earth and in our state that things are not always so good, and we hope that You will be with us. Send Your Spirit upon this building and upon the Senate and the House, that You may inspire the men and women here to carry out the duties for all of the people in this great state of ours. And we thank Him again.
And, Lord, be with us as we begin this session today and all sessions in this building for Your great honor and glory; for the wonderful and thanksgiving we have for placing us here; and the duty and the honor that we have to work for Your people in this state. We thank You and pray in Your name. Amen.

Statements
Senators Scott and Van Woerkom asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.
The motion prevailed.
Senator Scott’s statement is as follows:
While we were out on break, the National Foundation for Women Legislators met in wonderful Sarasota, Florida. Senator Clark-Coleman and I met, and I am the Michigan State Director for the National Foundation of Women Legislators. One of the conferences I attended was regarding teen dating violence, which I was truly shocked at. I really didn’t know. So I want to share it with my colleagues.
One in five teens between the ages of 13 and 14 say their friends are victims of dating violence. If you think that is young, consider this: Nearly half of all teens between the ages of 11 and 14 years old say they know friends who have been verbally abused, often the first step in physical abuse, as you know.
Not only should children this age not have to deal with domestic violence, but they don’t know how to deal with domestic violence. I doubt that many parents and teachers realize that they need to be talking to their children about this issue at such a young age. I know that I didn’t think so.
At the conference last month, I had a chance to meet with Jane Randel, who is the vice president of communications for Liz Claiborne Inc. Jane told me about the Love Is Not Abuse Campaign, and I was happy to pledge my support to this.
In addition to talking to the media and my legislative colleagues about the realities of adolescent dating violence, I am going to be talking to my policy staff about possible legislation to incorporate discussions about dating violence in the classroom, and my colleagues from around the state are planning to do the same. I’d also like to find more ways to bring this information into the home, where mothers and fathers can use it to start talking to their children about this issue.
We’re talking to a lot of people today because today is It’s Time to Talk Day. It’s time to talk every day, really, but we hope that through this special day teen dating violence will receive some attention and heightened awareness. So I would like for my colleagues to help me on this issue. I’ll be bringing that bill when we return in January.
The NFWL is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational organization, and I am happy to be a part of that.
And, of course, as always, since I have talked a number of times on this, I just want you to know I want you to move my bills.
Senator Van Woerkom statement is as follows:
I just want to offer my congratulations to four football teams in Muskegon County who won the State Championship. This has never been done before in the state of Michigan. We are proud of them. It was the Montague Football Team, the Muskegon Big Reds, Oakridge, and Muskegon Catholic Central—all were successful this past weekend.
I just wanted to offer my congratulations.
Senator Cropsey moved that rule 2.106 be suspended to allow committees to meet during Senate session.
The motion prevailed, a majority of the members serving voting therefor.
By unanimous consent the Senate returned to the order of
