e/d/s = entered during session

Rep. Hugh D. Crawford, from the 38th District, offered the following invocation:

“Heavenly Father, We bow our heads and thank You for Your Love. Accept our thanks for the peace that yields this day and the shared faith that makes its continuance likely. Make us strong to do Your work, willing to heed and hear Your will, and write on our hearts these words: Use power to help people. For we are given power not to advance our own purposes, nor to make a great show in the world, nor a name. There is but one just use of power, and it is to serve people. Help us to remember it, Lord. Amen. George Bush.”

House Resolution No. 182.

A resolution declaring November 2009 as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, November 2009 is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month; and

Whereas, Alzheimer’s is a disease of the brain that destroys brain cells. It causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior. It is the most common form of dementia; and

Whereas, It is estimated that there are as many as 5.3 million people living with Alzheimer’s disease in the United States; and

Whereas, By 2010, there will be nearly a half million new cases of Alzheimer’s each year. By 2050, there will be nearly a million new cases annually; and

Whereas, There are over 170,000 people in Michigan with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, and this number will grow dramatically with this decade if no cure is found; and

Whereas, The Alzheimer’s Association is an organization dedicated to building a world without Alzheimer’s. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize the month of November 2009 as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

The resolution was adopted.

House Resolution No. 183.

A resolution recognizing November 2009 as Dwarfism Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, Dwarfism is a condition characterized by short stature, meaning an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches or less; and

Whereas, Dwarfism can be caused by any one of more than two hundred conditions, most of which are genetic. The most common type, accounting for 70 percent of all cases of short stature, is called achondroplasia; and

Whereas, Dwarfism can and most often does occur in families where both parents are of average height. In fact, 85 percent of children with achondroplasia are born to average-size parents; and

Whereas, Dwarfism is not in any way an intellectual disability. A person who has dwarfism is typically of normal intelligence; and

Whereas, Dwarfism is not a disease that requires a ‘cure.’ Most people with the condition can live long, fulfilling lives; and

Whereas, Dwarfism is not a reason to assume someone is incapable of leading a normal and fulfilling life. Little people go to school, go to work, marry, and raise children, just like their average-size peers; now, therefore be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize November 2009 as Dwarfism Awareness Month in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That the members of this legislative body urge all Michiganians to use this month as an opportunity to educate themselves about Dwarfism.

House Resolution No. 184.

A resolution recognizing November 19, 2009, as Great American Smoke-Out Day in the state of Michigan.

Whereas, The state of Michigan has long been concerned with the health of its citizens; and

Whereas, The U.S. Surgeon General has said that smoking remains the single most preventable cause of premature death in our society; and

Whereas, For thirty years, millions of smokers have participated in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smoke-Out, a day on which they give up cigarettes for 24 hours; in the hope they may quit permanently; and

Whereas, A significant number of those who gave up cigarettes for the day were able to give up the habit entirely; and

Whereas, This demonstration of success suggests that the Great American Smoke-Out has potential for improving the health of the citizens of Michigan; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize November 19, 2009, as Great American Smoke-Out Day in the state of Michigan; and be it further

Resolved, That we recognize that the citizens of Michigan deserve the opportunity to grow, thrive, be healthy, informed and aware of their health and of the factors that affect that health.
