Rep. Bill Caul, from the 99th District, offered the following invocation:

“We thank You Lord for the gift of life. We ask You Lord for the wisdom to use that gift.

As Philippians 2:3-4 tells us to… ‘Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than ourselves.’

Each of us should look not only at our own interests, but also to the interests of others.

May our will be a reflection of Your will so that our actions will always be honorable and just, and one day may we experience the perfect peace that only You can give.

Lord, we ask for Your strength, this day and everyday, to do as we are reminded in Luke 12:48. ‘From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much will be asked.’

In Your name we pray, Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions

Reps. Dillon, Ball, Barnett, Lisa Brown, Terry Brown, Byrnes, Constan, Ebli, Griffin, Kennedy, LeBlanc, Liss, Mayes, Neumann, Polidori, Rogers, Segal, Slavens, Smith and Warren offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 302.

A resolution to recognize the retirement of Ron Gettelfinger, chassis line repairman and President of the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America.

Whereas, Since becoming a member of Local 862 in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1964, Ron Gettelfinger has staunchly represented the interests of hard working union members everywhere. A member of and a heroic advocate for the American working class, Ron Gettelfinger truly understands the value of commitment, perseverance, and knowledge. First elected as president of the UAW in 2002, he has now made the difficult decision to retire and bring to a close more than 45 years of standing up for honored laborers. It is without any doubt this retirement will be in name only; for the endemic devotion to fight for causes which are just is replete within Ron Gettelfinger and surely he will stand up for the rights of workers for another 45 years; and

Whereas, While our country struggled through an unprecedented economic trial, known to many as the “Great Recession,” millions of workers became jobless, and thousands of businesses were forced to close their doors permanently. Yet, while the automotive industry and its suppliers bore the brunt of this recession, experience leaders such as Ron Gettelfinger were quick to take action to protect this vital part of our economy. A debt of gratitude is owed by every employed person in our state, for if not for the independent, intelligent, and difficult choices made by Ron Gettelfinger, the continuation of our domestic car companies would surely be in doubt today; and

Whereas, While presidents and CEO’s were replaced in businesses throughout all sectors of the economy in recent years, Ron Gettelfinger has remained to become a resource whom executives and union workers alike have come to rely on. In an unparalleled feat throughout the last 75 years of the UAW and the car industry, Ron Gettelfinger expertly brought together union members, executive management, investors, citizens, and all interested parties in an effort to save our domestic auto companies and the jobs they provide. We are all better off today as a direct result of his endeavors; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body recognize the retirement of Ron Gettelfinger. We honor the unmatched accomplishments and contributions of this chassis line repairman and president of the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America.

The question being on the adoption of the resolution,

The resolution was adopted.

______

Rep. Dean moved that House Committees be given leave to meet during the balance of today’s session.

The motion prevailed.

Reps. Nerat, Barnett, Lisa Brown, Terry Brown, Byrnes, Ebli, Kennedy, LeBlanc, Liss, Neumann, Slavens, Smith and Warren offered the following resolution:

House Resolution No. 303.

A resolution to urge the inclusion of a ban on new oil and gas drilling beneath the Great Lakes in the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.

Whereas, The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement has coordinated U.S. and Canadian efforts to protect water quality in the Great Lakes for nearly 40 years. The agreement acknowledges that the Great Lakes are a shared resource, and that activities on either side of the border can affect how people and businesses use the lakes on both sides of the border; and

Whereas, The recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico demonstrates the disastrous potential consequences of drilling for oil and gas beneath the Great Lakes. A similar accident in the Great Lakes would foul water quality over large areas, devastating billion dollar fishing, boating, and tourism industries and the millions of jobs associated with them. Great Lakes residents would face the additional risk that drinking water for millions of people could be affected; and

Whereas, The risk to Great Lakes water quality outweighs the economic benefit from tapping oil and gas reserves beneath the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are far too valuable to far too many people, and the gulf situation clearly demonstrates that a catastrophic spill can happen despite precautions; and

Whereas, The United States has banned offshore and directional drilling in and under the Great Lakes, but Canada has not followed suit. Canada continues to allow offshore drilling for natural gas in the Great Lakes and directional drilling beneath the Great Lakes for both oil and gas. The Great Lakes will not be truly protected from a potential disaster until Canada agrees to provide similar protection; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the inclusion of a ban on new oil and gas drilling beneath the Great Lakes in the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement; and be it further

Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the U.S. Secretary of State, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the members of the Michigan congressional delegation.

The resolution was referred to the Committee on Great Lakes and Environment.
