Statements

Senators Scott, Anderson, Jelinek and Garcia asked and were granted unanimous consent to make statements and moved that the statements be printed in the Journal.

The motion prevailed.

Senator Scott’s statement is as follows:

Dr. Martin Luther King once said, “I was a drum major for justice.” I can identify with that feeling because I, too, am a drum major for justice for people who are being unfairly treated by their auto insurance companies. Next month, I will be joined by many of my constituents, and no doubt many of yours, as we gather on the Capitol steps and continue to beat the drum demanding auto insurance reform in Michigan.

I hope that when their voices join mine, you will finally see that it is time to deal with the continuing lack of fairness in the way that auto insurance rates are set in our state. The people who will join me are not asking for a handout. They are not saying that they don’t want to pay for auto insurance. They just want to pay a fair price for the insurance that they must buy.

The drums are getting louder, and I hope that we will finally convince you to take up my legislation, and work with me to make auto insurance fair for all Michigan drivers.

Senator Anderson’s statement is as follows:

Tomorrow afternoon, the Capitol lawn will be filled with college students who have traveled from all around Michigan to Lansing to demand one thing—the protection of Michigan Promise scholarships. These students are outraged and who can blame them? We promised nearly 100,000 students that they would receive these scholarships when they were in high school as a reward for their excellent academic performance.

A student in my district wrote me to tell me that these potential cuts are forcing young people into more debt when they graduate from postsecondary school. That is not the way to ensure their success. It’s a way to ensure that less young people will continue into postsecondary education. This student is absolutely right. These are the young people we want to keep in our state to build lives and grow our economy. Cutting these funds will drive them into more debt, and it is not something that we should be doing. We want to keep those young people here in our universities.

Michigan families also depend on these funds to send their kids to college. Parents in my district have expressed their desperation over the fact that we are obstructing their children’s chance to go to college, and we are chasing them out of Michigan to find better education deals. We must find a way to deal with cuts that we know we have to make, but we cannot move this state forward if we shortsightedly yank the rug out from underneath the very generation that will be tasked with rebuilding Michigan.

This is not a partisan issue; it is not about politics. It is about our future. We need to support higher education and keep our promise of granting Michigan citizens access to an affordable college education. I hope members will think about this.

Senator Jelinek’s statement is as follows:

Last Friday, I had the opportunity to join some 900 fellow farmers who crossed the Mackinac Bridge on their tractors. It was an interesting ride—900-plus tractors crossing the Mackinac Bridge. Before the parade started through Mackinaw City at 10:00 a.m., I had the opportunity to speak with several of those tractor drivers—those farmers—and I asked them the question, “Why are you here, besides the obvious answer of wanting to drive your tractor across the bridge? What do you hope to accomplish here today?” Those I talked to said they were there to show support for agriculture. “We are here to show that agriculture is strong in Michigan. We are a vibrant economy. We are supporting this state.” In return, several of them said, “We need support in return.”

Our goal here is also to let the state government know that we need the support of a Michigan Department of Agriculture. We do not want the Department of Agriculture to go away or to be combined with any other department. To maintain the second-largest industry in the state of Michigan—agriculture—we need the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

That is the message today that I carry from those 900-plus farmers. Maintain the Michigan agriculture economy, the second-largest industry in this state.

Senator Garcia’s statement is as follows:

I rise to give my voting intentions for last Thursday’s session. I missed session due to the funeral of a family member. While I was gone, the Senate took Roll Call Nos. 457-460, and I would have voted “yes” on all of them.

Senator Gleason stated that had he been present on September 15 when the votes were taken on the passage of the following bills, he would have voted “nay”:
