The Speaker, on behalf of the entire membership of the House of Representatives, offered the following resolution:

            House Resolution No. 92.

            A resolution of tribute offered as a memorial for David Frederick Upton, former member of the House of Representatives.

            Whereas, With the passing of David Frederick Upton, the southwestern region of Michigan and the entire state have suffered a genuine loss. As a leader in the business world, community service, and elected office, this unpretentious gentleman touched many lives and leaves a legacy of commitment to others that will long be cherished by all who knew him; and

            Whereas, Born in Benton Harbor, David Upton was a man of great loyalty and integrity, traits fitting for the Eagle Scout he was. Like many of his generation, David Upton had his education, at the University of Michigan, interrupted by World War II. His distinguished service as a captain of an LST landing craft in the Pacific also put him on Iwo Jima as our flag was raised. Returning to civilian life, Mr. Upton finished his studies in Ann Arbor, began his career in business, and took on a variety of civic leadership roles in his home community; and

            Whereas, Mr. Upton's varied business experiences, which ranged from manufacturing to finance to the wine industry, and his involvement in education and public service groups, led him to elective responsibilities. With his service to the 1961-62 Constitutional Convention, he help craft Michigan's fundamental law. Following that work with a term in the House of Representatives, Representative Upton was involved in the implementation of the constitution and the modernization of state law. His return to the business world  was marked by accomplishment and a true passion for service and his family, as well as devotion to the Wolverines and to his beloved corner of our state. Clearly, this kind and unselfish man exerted an influence on others that will long endure; now, therefore, be it

            Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we offer this expression of our highest tribute to honor the memory of David Frederick Upton, a member of this legislative body from 1963 to 1964 and a delegate of the 1961-62 Constitutional Convention; and be it further

            Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Upton family as evidence of our lasting esteem for his memory.
