A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5540 AS INTRODUCED 4-18-12

The bill would require that, for 2012 only, the state convention of all political parties for the nomination of candidates for state offices begin not less than 58 days before the general November election.  The bill would amend the Michigan Election Law.

Under the Michigan Election Law, political party conventions in even-numbered years are required to begin not less than 60 days before the general November election.  The actual date (and location) of the conventions is designated by a party's state central committee in a call that must be issued at least 60 days before the August primaries.
