GIRL SCOUTS EXPLORER POST:

FIREFIGHTER TRAINING

House Bill 5597

Sponsor:  Rep. Stacy Erwin Oakes

Committee:  Local, Intergovernmental, and Regional Affairs

Complete to 11-28-12

A SUMMARY OF HOUSE BILL 5597 AS INTRODUCED 5-3-12

House Bill 5597 would amend Public Act 153 of 2011 (MCL 29.332), which provides for firefighter training programs and examinations, to allow an organized fire department that administers a firefighter I or II course under the Firefighters Training Council Act to establish a Girl Scouts of America Explorer Post to provide firefighter training for young people who are 16 years of age or older.  Currently under the law, only a Boy Scouts of America explorer post can be established; the bill would retain that provision and extend it to Girl Scouts.

FISCAL IMPACT:

HB 5597 would not have a significant fiscal impact on state government. The bill could have a fiscal impact on local fire departments to the extent that training courses may be supported with local revenues. However, the bill is permissive and would not require local fire departments to participate.
