A SUMMARY OF HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION GG AS INTRODUCED 5-28-14
House Joint Resolution GG would amend Article VIII, Section 3 of the Michigan Constitution of 1963 to require that, beginning January 1, 2015, the State Board of Education consist of eight members who would be nominated by party conventions and elected from single-member districts for terms of eight years, as prescribed by law.
Now the eight members of the State Board of Education are nominated by party conventions and elected at-large for terms of eight years. Under the resolution, this provision would be in effect until December 31, 2014.
The resolution would require voter approval at the next general election. A general election is held in November of an even-numbered year.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The bill would not have a fiscal impact on the State Board of Education. A fiscal analysis regarding the impact on election costs is in process.
