CONTENT

The bill would amend the Michigan Zoning Enabling Act to allow a township with a population of at least 70,000 to regulate or control oil and gas wells within its boundaries.

The Act prohibits a county or township from regulating or controlling the drilling, completion, or operation of oil or gas wells or other wells drilled for oil or gas exploration purposes, and provides that a county or township does not have jurisdiction over the issuance of permits for the location, drilling, completion, operation, or abandonment of such wells. Under the bill, these provisions would apply to a township only if it had a population of less than 70,000.
