INFANT ADOPTION H.B. 4647 (S-1):
SUMMARY OF SUBSTITUTE
BILL IN COMMITTEE
House Bill 4647 (Substitute S-1)
Sponsor: Representative Margaret E. O'Brien
House Committee: Families, Children, and Seniors
Senate Committee: Families, Seniors and Human Services
CONTENT
The bill would amend the Michigan Adoption Code to allow a court, three months after formal placement, to enter an order of adoption for a child less than one year old at the time a petition for adoption was filed, unless the court determined that circumstances made adoption undesirable.
The Code generally requires a six-month period between formal placement of an adoptee and the issuance of a court order of adoption. The bill's provision would be an exception to this requirement.
(Formal placement generally refers to the termination of existing parental rights and the assignment of rights to the adoptive parents.)
The bill would take effect 180 days after the date it was enacted.
