Rep. Pam Faris, from the 48th District, offered the following invocation:
“A few years ago I had the good fortune to travel to Israel. I found one of the most peaceful places on earth at the Church of the Beatitudes.
I wanted to share the text of St. Matthew, Chapter 5; Verse 1-10 with you. It runs as follows:
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,2 and he began to teach them.
• Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 3)
• Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land. (Verse 4)
• Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Verse 5)
• Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill. (Verse 6)
• Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Verse 7)
• Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God. (Verse 8)
• Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Verse 9)
• Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Verse 10)
Amen.”

A resolution to declare February 21, 2013, as Conductive Education Day in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, Conductive education was developed over sixty years ago in Hungary by Dr. András Peto; and
Whereas, Conductive education is a unique teaching system that maximizes the independence and mobility of children and adults with neuro-motor disabilities like stroke survivors, and those with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, acquired brain injuries, Parkinson’s disease, and spina bifida; and
Whereas, Conductive education operates from a core belief in neuroplasticity, the lifelong ability of the brain to reorganize neural pathways based on new experiences, and on the premise that no matter how severe the disability, people can learn and improve when they are motivated; and
Whereas, Conductive education has the potential to make a significant, life-changing impact on the mobility and independence of close to 9 million people in the United States; and
Whereas, Conductive education helps individuals learn their way to independence; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare February 21, 2013, as Conductive Education day in the state of Michigan; and be it further
Resolved, That we encourage supporting this important program that increases the independence of people with disabilities in our community.

House Resolution No. 33.

Whereas, In the United States, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with an eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia; and
Whereas, Millions more struggle with binge eating disorders and many individuals struggle with body dissatisfaction and sub-clinical disordered eating attitudes and behaviors; and
Whereas, For women between fifteen and twenty-four years old who suffer from anorexia nervosa, the mortality rate associated with the illness is twelve times higher than the death rate of all other causes of death; and
Whereas, Anorexia nervosa has the highest premature fatality rate of any mental illness; and
Whereas, Forty percent of newly identified cases of anorexia are in girls 15 to 19 years old; and
Whereas, Only one-third of people with anorexia in the community receive mental health care; and
Whereas, The theme of this year’s Eating Disorder Awareness Week is “Everybody Knows Somebody” because awareness of eating disorders is spreading; and
Whereas, The aim of Eating Disorder Awareness Week is to ultimately prevent eating disorders and body image issues while reducing the stigma surrounding eating disorders and improving access to treatment; now, therefore, be it

Announcements by the Clerk
Following is a change to the schedule of the Standing Committees for the 2013-2014 Legislative Session:
Wednesdays 12:00 Noon Families, Children, and Seniors 519 House Office Building
The Clerk received the following dissent on Senate Bill No. 60, from Rep. Irwin:
I continue to object to the sloppy procedure of the House of Representatives. Motions for immediate effect are routinely gaveled through without even a pretense of vote counting. This motion requires support from 2/3rds of the members and there is no genuine effort to ascertain the level of support for immediate effect. I object to this practice and I object to the erroneous assertions printed in the House Journal that suggest an authentic counting of votes occurred on the House floor. There was no counting of votes and there was no assessment of the support for a rising vote as called for by the presiding officer. Indeed, less than 10 percent of the members rose at the call of the presiding officer.
______
Rep. Singh moved that the House adjourn.
The motion prevailed, the time being 2:50 p.m.
The Speaker Pro Tempore declared the House adjourned until Tuesday, February 26, at 1:30 p.m.
