Pastor Ernest Ruemenapp, Pastor of Family Heritage Baptist Church in Harrisville, offered the following invocation:
“Almighty God, and Heavenly Father we come before Thee today to ask Your blessings upon this sacred assembly of men and women who have been chosen by the people of Michigan to serve as the stewards of our sacred right to self-government.
Father, Thou hast said in Thy Word, ‘Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.’ I pray, Father that our representatives in these sacred chambers who serve as the stewards of our government would be found faithful in the exercise of their duties. I pray Your blessings upon our Governor, and upon his administration. I pray Your blessings upon our Judges. And I pray Your blessings upon our Senators and our Representatives. O Lord, these men and women need Your help, for the challenges that they face are very great.
Heavenly Father You have said in Your Word ‘Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD’ and truly You have blessed our State and our Nation because You were at one time the God of our forefathers. Yet we acknowledge today that we as a people have turned away from You and from the precepts of religion and morality that have brought Your blessings upon our country.
You have told us in Your word that ‘Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.’ Lord I pray that You would forgive our national sins and I pray that You would turn our hearts back to You and back to the paths of righteousness. Help us to remember that righteousness is doing right. And it is right to help the poor and the needy. It is right to love our neighbor as ourselves. It is right to protect the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. It is right to foster an economy where free enterprise can flourish and where people can find life sustaining jobs. It is right to defend the precepts of liberty and justice for all people, regardless of gender, race, or creed.
And today, O God, as we prepare ourselves for the celebration of Memorial Day let us remember that it is always right to remember those who have given their lives in the defense of the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Yet Lord, today we are concerned that the liberties these men and women have fought for are fast fading away. I fear, that we have come to that time in America where the words of Patrick Henry ‘Give me liberty or give me death’ must once again find their way into the hearts and mouths of our people, and especially our leaders.
O Lord, I pray that our elected leaders would understand that they have a great responsibility to lead our State and our nation in a revival of personal and religious liberty. For without the preservation of liberty nothing else that these men and women do in these sacred chambers of government will matter in the end.
Heavenly Father, our hearts are grieved because in recent days and weeks many of our citizens are being denied the liberty to speak openly and freely on matters of religion and morality.
Yes, Father, our hearts are grieved because respectable citizens of our country are being ostracized and eliminated from employment and other opportunities simply because they have dared to express a view that supports traditional marriage.
O Father, this effort to silence the voice of our people must not stand. This effort to rob our citizens of our long held sacred rights of free speech and religious expression is an attack upon the very foundation that our country was founded upon.
Father, we know that history has shown us that in nations where liberty has failed no man, no woman, and no child is safe! And Father we also know that in a nation where liberty has failed, religious persecution is inevitable. Without liberty there is no protection for any of our people, regardless of how rich or poor they may be. And that is why, O Lord, we Americans must once again muster the courage to say ‘Give me liberty or give me death.’
O God, as we look forward to Memorial Day, may we remember that You are always on the side of Liberty. Your Holy Word tells us that ‘Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty!’ And we are confident O Lord, that as long as Your Spirit dwells with us we shall enjoy the blessings of liberty.
Heavenly Father, I pray that You would give these men and women, who represent our people, in this State, the courage to fight for Liberty. O Father, give these men and women the fortitude to stand against the forces of Fascism that are once again sweeping across the world and are making inroads into our own beloved country.
Heavenly Father as the world becomes increasingly dangerous and unstable let those who lead us in our State and in our country be guided by a resolve to always do what is right, even when doing right is not popular. Help our representatives to remember that they are not only accountable to the people who elected them, but that they are ultimately accountable to Thee, the true and rightful Judge of all the earth.
Almighty God, these men and women whom we have chosen to lead us, need Your help! I pray that You would give to them the grace, the wisdom and the strength that they need to serve You this day and in the days ahead.
We ask these blessings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
