Pastor Brett Kays, Lead Minister of Southpoint Church in Trenton, offered the following invocation:
“Our God,
Thank You that we can pray to You in freedom and peace today…not just as a civil tradition, but with Your personal invitation to ask and seek in faith from the heart. This governing body needs Your wisdom from above and not from this world. Help them to carry out their role as servants of the citizens…doing what is just, and in alignment with Your will—so that right and good decisions are made with the power entrusted to them. Strengthen them to the work with good health, sound minds, and clear consciences. We’re all accountable to You because You are the ruler of the universe, and everything we do, speak and think is seen by You—so please forgive us when we fail in our weakness. Protect them and us all from harm, deception and corruption. Help them to walk in integrity, in a way worthy of respect and trust…not claiming honor, but in humility. I ask it through the name of Jesus, Amen.”

Motions and Resolutions
Rep. Dianda offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 407.
A resolution to express support for the construction of new electricity generating facilities in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Whereas, The largest power plant in the Upper Peninsula is scheduled for closure. The Presque Isle Power Plant (PIPP) is a coal-fired power plant with a capacity of over 400 megawatts, located on Lake Superior in Marquette, Michigan. It is the region’s largest generation facility north of Green Bay, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, It is imperative that the Upper Peninsula move to find an alternative to the PIPP that is affordable for ratepayers, ensures grid reliability, and has the capacity to handle the region’s future energy needs; and
Whereas, Meeting the Upper Peninsula’s energy needs upon the closure of the PIPP exclusively by the construction of transmission lines to import power from Wisconsin electric-generating facilities is an expensive option that will hurt individual consumers, inhibit economic growth, and will not meet the region’s future demand for capacity; and
Whereas, Investment in new generation facilities, including those that use natural gas, solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy, will keep jobs in the Upper Peninsula and ensure that the people of the State of Michigan have control over the means of production of the electricity upon which they rely; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we express support for the construction of new electricity generating facilities in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; and be it further
Resolved, That we call on energy companies to build new generating facilities in the Upper Peninsula and investors to support them.
The resolution was referred to the Committee on Energy and Technology.
Reps. Franz, Crawford, Heise, Hooker, Howrylak, Kelly, Kowall and LaVoy offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 408.
A resolution to declare September 20, 2014, as POW/MIA Recognition Day in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, The United States has fought in many wars. Thousands of Americans who served in those wars were captured by the enemy or listed as missing in action; and
Whereas, It has always been the creed of those who wear a military uniform never to leave a fallen comrade on the battlefield. On this day, we pay tribute to those who are missing in action or have been taken prisoner of war and never returned home; and
Whereas, To date, a total of 83,467 Americans are listed as prisoners of war or missing in action since World War II. This includes 73,681 in World War II, 7,951 in the Korean War, 1,657 in Vietnam, 127 in the Cold War, and 6 in Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom; and
Whereas, We as a nation can never collectively rest until we account for all those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country; and
Whereas, We express our deepest gratitude to these patriots in both words and actions, knowing they were fighting to protect our rights and freedoms; and
Whereas, Many American prisoners of war were subjected to brutal and inhumane treatment by their enemy captors in violation of international codes and customs for the treatment of prisoners of war, and many such prisoners of war died from such treatment; and
Whereas, Their work will not be complete, nor will our commitment be fulfilled, until they come home; and
Whereas, The stark POW/MIA flag will fly proudly along with the U.S. and state of Michigan flags on September 20, serving as a commanding reminder that the duty of those who are missing in action or prisoners of war is finished, but ours continues as we seek to find, repatriate, and honor these courageous men and women; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare September 20, 2014, as POW/MIA Recognition Day in the state of Michigan.
