Rep. Kenneth Kurtz, from the 58th District, offered the following invocation:
“Today, O God, we assemble in this place, one of the many as such that symbolizes the greatness of the true heart of these United States of America.
Today, we are a united people who gives honor to whom honor is do. And we remember the willing sacrifice that selfless and courageous men and women eagerly displayed when, without question, they responded bravely to the attacks of evil terrorists attacks upon innocent men, women and children.
When the bell rang, when the alarm sounded, when the whistle blew, united they rose to meet the unknown without thought of their life or limb. They indeed were responders first, friends, neighbors, family who were willing to give all and which many did.
Today, O God, we have not forgotten, nor shall we, that fateful day of September 11, 2001. Eternal rest we pray to all who departed as a result of the evil displayed upon us that fateful day.
Today, O God, we are surrounded, in this place, by a host of those who still stand to respond to their communities, no matter the human cost, when the bell should ring, the alarm would sound, the whistle would blow. They not only symbolize the responders of 9/11/2001, they are the responders of today. They share the same heart, mind and mission of those who have gone before them and who yet serve today across this land. They protect. They serve. They are ready.
Today, O God, we are continually reminded of the evil that exists, both foreign and domestic. And we offer a prayer to You O God for the safety and protection of our responders. We are thankful for them. They give to each of us that measure of assurance that when evil should come and when untold danger is in our midst, they will be there to protect and do all they can to keep us safe. For this we are sincerely and humbly grateful.
Today, O God, we also pray for the men and women of our Armed Forces around the world who are fulfilling their role as responders also. Grant them courage and safety in the difficult days ahead.
And as a nation may we find our continued strength in humbleness before You, O God, striving for peace in all that we pursue.
In Jesus name, I Pray,
Amen.”
